About Himalayan Balsam
Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) is a non-native invasive plant introduced to the UK in the 1800's. The plant has a nice smelling flower and is a relative of Busy Lizzie but left untouched can quickly takeover your garden. The plant is particularly virulent along river banks, allotments and wasteland. The plant spreads rapidly smothering vegetation in its path. It can grow up to 3m tall and each plant can produce up to 800 seeds and disperse easily. This species is listed on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act in England and Wales therefore, it is an offence to plant or spread into the wild.
How we remove Himalayan Balsam
Himalayan Balsam is one of a few invasive plants that can be managed with physical control rather than chemicals. In extreme cases, physical control may not be possible or viable so then we will look at herbicide alternatives, always opting for the one which is safest and has the least environmental impact.

Why are invasive plants a problem?
When a non-native species is introduced, the environment may not have the capacity to manage the spread of that species. The invasive plant may outcompete native species for resources preventing it from growing and therefore reducing biodiversity. In addition to the effects on the environment, invasive plants maybe taking over your garden and stopping you from enjoying your green space.
